How the number is made
- Walls: 2 × (length + width) × height. Take out about 21 sq ft for each door and 15 for each window; add length × width for the ceiling.
- Gallons: area × coats ÷ what a gallon covers (about 350 sq ft on smooth walls), rounded up.
- Hours: area × coats ÷ what one painter rolls in an hour.
Questions people ask
How many square feet does a gallon of paint cover?
About 350 to 400 square feet on smooth, primed walls; the can says what that paint covers. Rough or porous surfaces take more.
How many coats do I need?
Two coats for a solid, even color, and a primer coat first for new drywall, stains or a big color change.
How long does it take to paint a room?
It depends on the prep, the trim and the painter. This tool uses what one painter rolls in an hour on the walls; set it to your own crew’s pace.
