Markup is on top of your cost; margin is the share of the price you keep. Margin = markup ÷ (1 + markup).

How the number is made

  1. Markup is added on top of your cost: price = cost × (1 + markup).
  2. Margin is the share of the price you keep: margin = (price − cost) ÷ price.
  3. To turn one into the other: margin = markup ÷ (1 + markup), and markup = margin ÷ (1 − margin).

Questions people ask

What is the difference between markup and margin?

Markup is a percent of your cost; margin is a percent of the price. The same dollars give a smaller margin than markup: a 50% markup is a 33% margin.

What markup gives a 50% margin?

A 100% markup: you double your cost. Cost $1,000, price $2,000, you keep $1,000, which is 50% of the price.

Why does it matter?

Pricing with a markup while thinking it is your margin leaves money on every job. If you need to keep 30%, a 30% markup only keeps 23%.
